I love creating beautiful things
I grew up on a farm in a small coastal city in New Zealand, surrounded by green paddocks, trees and animals with Mount Taranaki as my backdrop. I have always delighted in nature and the act of creating; the two are deeply connected for me. I relish in finding glimpses of beauty in my daily life and this is what I hope to capture in my paintings.
My imagination informs most of the work I create. Something catches my eye and then I’m off on a thought train to a whimsical destination. I love to paint with oils because of how they blend smoothly and because there is no rush to work quickly for fear of the paint drying. I also find great joy in playing with watercolor, discovering the outcomes as the colours bleed on the page with a mind of their own.
My natural style leans to realism, but since the invention of photography I feel there is no need to transfer things as they are on to canvas. I am much more interested in grasping what could be. My intention is that my paintings would be imbued with meaning and beauty that cause the viewer to slow down and ponder how it might speak to their life.
